Location
RHD (UK cars): driver's side, low down and directly beneath the steering column, behind the press-fitted plastic trim panel that runs across the bottom of the fascia. Once that panel is out of the way the black 16-pin socket sits in the outer half of the opening, towards the driver's door, roughly above the pedal box and below the column shroud. LHD: mirror image — same panel below the column, socket to the left of the column and immediately alongside the fascia fuse/relay plate, which on left-hand-drive cars lives in that same footwell recess beside the pedals. Position is the same on every Mk2 trim (Studio, Studio Connect, Style, Style+, Edge, Zetec, Titanium, Grand Prix, Metal, Tattoo, Digital) and on both the 1.2 petrol and 1.3 TDCi. Do not go hunting behind the glovebox on a right-hand-drive car — that flap is the cabin fuse box, which moves to the passenger side on RHD, and the diagnostic socket does not move with it.
How to access
Grip the lower edge of the plastic trim panel under the steering column and pull it straight towards you. It is press-fitted on clips — no screws, no tools, it comes away in your hand. The 16-pin connector is visible as soon as the panel is clear, so there is no reaching blind up behind the dash. Push the panel back onto its clips when you are done.
