About car key batteries
Most remote and smart keys take a 3 V lithium coin cell, and the CR2032 is by far the most common. The code is printed on the old cell, or look your car up above.
Usually not. The key keeps its programming without a battery, so most work straight away. A few cars need a simple resync, which your handbook will describe.
Typically two to four years, less on a smart key you carry everywhere. Weak buttons, a shorter range or a low-battery warning on the dash are the signs.
Some keys, including many older BMW slot keys, have a rechargeable cell soldered to the board that charges in the ignition slot. You can't swap it like a coin cell. A long drive can top up a weak one; otherwise an auto locksmith can sort it.
