Location

RHD (UK): driver's footwell, low under the dash on the door side of the steering column - roughly between your right knee and ankle, just left of and below the bonnet-release lever. The 16-pin socket is purple and sits in an opening in the lower dash trim, so kneel in the footwell with a torch and look up. If the opening is empty the socket has been pushed back behind the panel (common after brake-light-switch work) and the lower trim under the column has to come off to retrieve it. LHD: bottom left of the driver's footwell, left of the steering column above the pedals, behind a clip-on cover. No trim-specific differences reported across 1.4, TDI and FSI cars.

How to access

Small clip-on cover over the socket - unclip it by hand, no tools needed, and the 16-pin connector is directly behind it. On many older cars the cover is missing and the purple socket is visible straight away.
