Location

LHD: driver's footwell, on the lower edge of the dashboard hard against the driver's door — outboard of the steering column, roughly level with your left knee, immediately alongside the bonnet release lever. RHD: mirror image on the driver's side, on the lower dash edge between the steering wheel and the driver's door, again right next to the bonnet release. Same position on every S60 trim from 2000 to 2009 including the S60 R, and unchanged by the 2005 facelift. Do not go hunting in the centre console armrest — that is where the older 850 and 1998–2000 V70 put it, and the P2 does not.

How to access

Small hinged plastic flap moulded into the underside of the dash edge, marked 'OBDII'. Hook a fingernail under the lower lip and pull it straight down — no tools needed. The 16-pin connector sits slightly recessed behind it and faces down, so in a saloon you are feeling for it across the sill rather than looking at it. If the tool powers up but will not talk to anything, check fuse 23 (5 A) in the passenger-compartment fuse panel before you blame the tool — that fuse feeds the diagnostic socket along with the light switch module and the climate control unit, and it is a common quiet failure on these cars.
