Location

The 16-pin socket sits on the car's left-hand side and does NOT swap sides for right-hand drive. On a UK right-hand-drive 987 it is therefore in the PASSENGER footwell, up under the dash beneath the glovebox, immediately next to the footwell courtesy light — work from the passenger door or lean across, don't hunt around the driver's side. On left-hand drive it is the driver's footwell, under the dash just outboard of the pedal box and directly above the footrest, again beside the footwell light. Same position on Boxster and Cayman, on every trim, and on both 987.1 and 987.2. Two things catch people out: the black snap-off cover in the driver's footwell is the interior fuse panel, not the diagnostic socket, and the purple connector is a famously tight fit — expect to push firmly and squarely, and a smear of dielectric grease on the plug saves fighting it. Note this is unlike the later 981, where the socket was moved into the bottom of the fuse panel.
