Location

Under the steering column, behind the large one-piece plastic cover that spans the underside of the lower dashboard — not in the glovebox, not in the centre console, and not behind the fuse box lid. On RHD UK vans drop that cover and the 16-pin socket sits low against the column, roughly above the pedal box and slightly inboard; on LHD it is in the mirror-image position, low and to the left of the wheel. The cabin fuse box and the BSI itself are somewhere else entirely — behind the lower glovebox on the vehicle's left-hand side — so do not go hunting for the diagnostic socket there. Same arrangement on every Rifter trim from Active through GT, on both the five-seat and seven-seat bodies, and identical on the Partner van and e-Rifter.

How to access

There is a cover and it has to come off — the socket is not visible with the panel in place. The lower dashboard cover under the steering column is clipped, not screwed: start at an outer edge with a plastic trim tool or your fingers, work along the clips and pull the panel downward while supporting its weight. If you meet solid resistance rather than clip release, stop and look for a fastener rather than levering harder. Behind the panel there is airbag wiring — leave the yellow connectors alone. The 16-pin connector is visible and reachable as soon as the panel is down.
