RHD (UK): driver's side, low down beneath the steering column and slightly outboard of it, roughly knee height, behind the plastic trim/recess that sits under the light-switch pack and above the driver's footwell. The 16-pin socket is fixed into the roof of that recess and points down at the floor, so you look up into it rather than straight at it — the bonnet-release lever and the light-switch pack are the landmarks to aim for. LHD: mirror image — inside the small dashboard storage compartment on the left of the steering wheel, socket again behind a plastic cover inside the compartment. Position is the same on every Mk3 trim (LX/Edge, Zetec, Ghia, Titanium, Titanium X) and the 2010 facelift did not move it.
Plastic cover over the recess. Unclip it by hand from the TOP edge — everyone pulls from the bottom and these covers snap, they are a common broken part on this platform. No tools needed. The 16-pin connector is immediately behind it, facing downwards, so the plug goes in effectively upside-down compared with most cars and you will be working partly by feel. If the socket is completely dead, check fuse F16 (5A) in the passenger-compartment fuse box below the glove compartment before condemning anything — it feeds the diagnostic socket and the alarm's battery-backup sounder off the same circuit.
