RHD (UK): driver's footwell, at the bottom edge of the dash directly under the steering column, behind a small hinged flap in the lower trim. Follow the steering column down towards the pedals and the flap is at about knee height. LHD (mainland Europe): under the steering column on the left-hand side, above the footrest. The same dash layout runs on pre-facelift (2002-2005) and facelift (2005-2012) cars. If the flap is empty, the socket has probably been unclipped and tucked up behind the trim, so follow the loom up into the dash.
Small hinged plastic flap in the lower dash trim under the column. Pull it open by hand, no tools needed. The 16-pin socket sits behind it facing down, so get your head into the footwell to see it.
