RHD (UK vans, chassis cabs and UK-registered coachbuilt motorhomes): sit in the driver's seat and look under the lower dash to the RIGHT of the steering column, inboard of the right-hand cab fusebox. The 16-pin socket sits in a fixed mounting plate at the back of the recess behind the lower-dash cover - it does not hang loose in the loom, so if you are feeling a dangling plug you are in the wrong place. LHD (mainland European vans and most German-built Hymer conversions): mirror image, under the lower dash to the LEFT of the steering column beside the left-hand cab fusebox, behind the same cover. Position is the same across panel van, chassis cab and Camping Car bodywork versions, because the coachbuilder does not touch the cab dash. One trap: a van first registered around 2002 can still be the outgoing Type 230, which has no under-dash 16-pin socket at all - it uses a 3-pin Fiat diagnostic plug under the bonnet. Check the chassis marking on the wheelhouse by the passenger seat reads ZFA 244 before you quote an under-dash job.
Small rectangular plastic cover/hatch in the lower dash beside the steering column. Undo the two captive cross-head screws (they stay in the cover) and the hatch hinges/pulls away. The recess also holds some fuses and wiring; push the thick black cab-loom wires aside and the 16-pin socket is on a mounting plate towards the back. A short Phillips screwdriver is all that is needed.
