RHD (UK): passenger side, inside the glovebox. Open the glovebox and you are looking at the cabin fuse box cover; the 16-pin socket is mounted alongside the fuses behind that cover. It is not down by the driver's pedals on a UK car, and it is not in the engine bay — the only fuses under the bonnet are beside the battery. LHD: below the dashboard on the driver's side, behind the same style of pull-down fuse box cover, left of the steering column. Same arrangement on every Mk1 trim including the Pluriel, and unchanged across the 2005 facelift.
The socket sits behind a plastic fuse box cover. On RHD cars open the glovebox first, then pull/unclip the fuse box lid inside it; on LHD cars drop the trapdoor under the steering column. No tools needed — the cover unclips by hand. The 16-pin connector is visible once the cover is off, though it sits recessed alongside the fuses so you reach in to seat the lead.
