RHD (UK cars): driver's footwell on the outboard side. The 16-pin socket sits at the base of the right-hand A-pillar, recessed into the footwell side trim panel roughly level with the driver's right shin, immediately above and behind the bonnet release lever — it is outboard of the steering column, not tucked under the middle of the dash, so looking straight up under the wheel will miss it. Kneel outside the open driver's door and look up into the corner where the kick panel meets the A-pillar. Same position on every body in this range — E81 three-door, E82 coupe, E87/E87N five-door and E88 convertible — and on every trim including M Sport and the 123d. LHD cars: mirrored, at the base of the left-hand A-pillar in the same relationship to the bonnet release.
Two covers, not one — this is what catches people out. First a moulded blanking panel is clipped into the footwell side trim over the socket recess; pull it straight off by hand or ease it out with a plastic trim wedge, no screws and no tools needed. Behind it the socket carries its own small hinged plastic cap that flips down off the face of the 16-pin connector. Both are separate parts and are frequently missing on older cars, in which case the bare connector is visible straight away. Refit both afterwards.
