RHD (UK cars): driver's side, outboard of the wheel. Sit in the driver's seat and look down to your right, roughly level with your right knee — the socket is behind the lower dash panel that sits between the steering wheel and the driver's door, the one with the small open cubby tray moulded into its face and the fusebox behind it. LHD cars are the mirror image: the same panel, but to the left of the steering wheel, again outboard towards the driver's door. Position is identical on 595, 595 Turismo, 595 Competizione, 595C and the 695 editions, and the 2016 Series 4 dashboard refresh did not move it.
The panel is a snap-fit trim with two clips along the bottom edge and two tabs hooked under the dash at the top. Take hold of the bottom edge and pull it firmly straight towards you — it needs more force than you expect and lets go with a crack that sounds worse than it is, but no tools are needed. Behind it the yellow 16-pin Fiat connector is visible immediately and needs no further reaching. The plug body is tapered like a flattened pyramid so the lead only goes on one way round; line it up rather than forcing it. Refit by sliding the two top tabs back under the dash first, then pushing the bottom edge home until both clips latch. Be aware that anything left permanently plugged into the socket — an insurance black box or a tracker — will foul the panel and stop it clipping back on.
