Location
RHD (UK): driver's footwell, set into the underside of the lower dash trim almost straight above the accelerator pedal, towards the right-hand side of the footwell. The 16-pin socket faces down into the footwell, so kneel at the driver's door and look up with a torch or feel along the trim for the recess. A plug left in it sits close to your right foot, so use a short extension lead on long jobs. Same position on the One, Cooper, Cooper D, Cooper S, Cooper SD and JCW hatch, and on the R55 Clubman. LHD imports: the mirror position, top left of the pedals by the clutch.
How to access
The socket housing has a small plastic cover over its face on many cars. Pull or prise it off by hand (the emergency key blade makes a good lever); no tools needed. It is often missing on older cars, leaving the socket exposed.
