R56

Illustration — use it to know where to look.

Location

LHD (all US cars): driver's footwell, on the underside of the lower dash panel to the left of the pedal box, directly above the footrest (dead pedal) and below the knee bolster. The 16-pin socket faces down; your left foot will knock anything plugged into it, so use a short extension lead for long jobs. Same position on Cooper, Cooper S and John Cooper Works hatch, and on the R55 Clubman and R57 Convertible.

How to access

Pre-facelift cars (built to about mid-2010) have a small push-on plastic cap over the socket (it has three contacts inside and is not a hinged flap): pull it straight off by hand, no tools. Facelift (LCI) cars from mid-2010 have no cap and the socket is exposed.
