Location

Under the steering wheel on the driver's side, low down on the dash end where the driver's coin/storage tray and fusebox sit. The 16-pin socket is in that same end-of-dash area near the column, roughly above the pedals. On most T4s a small pull-out flap or the coin tray sits over the area - twist the tray fastener anti-clockwise or pull the flap to expose the socket. RHD (UK): driver's footwell side, right of the column. LHD: driver's footwell side, left of the column. Same end-of-dash position across panel van, Caravelle and Multivan from the 1996 facelift on. Note: pre-facelift 1990-1995 T4s used a 2x2 four-pin VAG diagnostic block in this area instead of the 16-pin socket; this record covers the 1996-on 16-pin layout.

How to access

On vans with the coin/storage tray over the area, rotate the tray's quarter-turn fastener anti-clockwise and pull the tray out to reach the socket and fusebox. Where a small pull-out plastic flap is fitted instead, hook a fingernail under the lip and pull it out - no tools needed. If the tray or flap is missing (common on older vans) the 16-pin connector is exposed.
