RHD (UK): driver's footwell, under the lower edge of the dashboard on the right-hand side of the steering column, roughly above the driver's right knee and immediately alongside the bonnet-release lever. Sit in the seat, drop your head to knee height and look up and outboard — it is the same socket the main dealer plugs into. LHD: mirror image, under the lower dash to the left of the steering column, again next to the bonnet release. Same position on saloon, estate and coupé, and the same on AMG cars — only the amount of room around the knee bolster changes.
There is a small plastic cover over it, not an open socket. It is a hinged/clip-in lower-dash panel that comes away by hand — get a fingernail under the outboard edge and pull it towards you; no screwdriver or Torx needed. The 16-pin connector is visible straight away behind it and sits at an angle, so push the lead straight in along the socket's axis rather than square to the floor. The cover is a separate serviceable trim piece and goes missing on high-mileage cars, so on some you will find the socket already exposed.
