LHD: driver's footwell, in the lower dash trim panel above the pedals, to the left of the steering column, roughly above the driver's left knee. RHD (UK): same lower dash trim panel above the pedals, to the right of the steering column, just above the driver's right knee. The socket sits in the same panel you remove to reach the EWS module. Same position on every engine and trim, pre- and post-facelift. Cars built before 09/2000 also have a round 20-pin BMW diagnostic socket under the bonnet: its screw-on cap carries bridges that link the cabin socket to the body modules, so if the cap is missing or loose the cabin OBD socket only talks to the engine and gearbox. Key programming on this car is not done through this socket - it is only needed for diagnosis and remote checks.
Small plastic cap/cover over the 16-pin socket in the lower dash trim - pull it off by hand, no tools. On BMWs of this era the cap contains a bridge, so refit it when you have finished.
