Location

Right-hand drive Japanese-market car, so the socket is on the right-hand side: driver's footwell, clipped to a bracket on the underside of the lower dash close to the steering column. It sits high and set back, so you will not see it from the seat — get your head down into the footwell and look up. Landmarks: it is the only black trapezoidal 16-pin connector on that bracket run, above the footrest and forward of the driver's knee panel; the round and rectangular plugs sitting next to it are body harness joints, not the diagnostic socket. Same position on every grade — 6- and 7-seat, 2WD and 4WD, 2.4 GDI and 3.0 V6 — and unchanged through both the July 2000 and October 2001 minor changes. This is the Japanese-market position only; the left-hand drive export cars are a different layout and nothing here has been carried across from them.

How to access

No hinged flap and no panel marked for diagnostics. The connector normally sits clipped to a metal stay behind the driver's lower dash trim — on most cars you can get a lead onto it by hand from the footwell without removing anything. If you need to see the pin numbering (you will, if you are doing the keyless registration), drop the lower knee panel: a couple of screws and plastic clips, no special tools, and it comes away in one piece. If you find the connector hanging loose on its harness rather than clipped to the stay, someone has been in there before — worth a look for aftermarket alarm or immobiliser wiring while you are down there.
