UK pre-facelift Mk2 cars (VIN serial starting 1, i.e. the sixth-from-last VIN digit is a 1) have no 16-pin OBD socket in the cabin. The only diagnostic connection is the small black flip-lid box marked DIAGNOSIS in the engine bay, on the left-hand (passenger side) inner wing next to the top of the front suspension strut, close to the air intake snorkel. Same on 1.6, 1.8 and 1.8iS. If the sixth-from-last VIN digit is a 2 the car is a facelift (Mk2.5): that has a 16-pin port inside the fuse box cover under the driver's side lower dash, right of the steering column. Key work on the pre-facelift car does not go through either connector — it is done at the ignition or on the immobiliser box.
Engine-bay box: release the clip on the lid and lift it — no tools needed. The terminal map sticker under the lid is often faded or missing; find +B (the only 12 V feed, top right) or GND first before bridging anything.
